The Shewing-Up of Blanco Posnet
George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
The Shewing-Up of Blanco Posnet
London, Constable and Company Ltd., 1909
Gregory and Yeats stood up to the British administration in Ireland when championing George Bernard Shaw’s The Shewing-up of Blanco Posnet. Deemed blasphemous in England, where plays could be banned by the authority of the Lord Chamberlain (the official censor of theater until 1968, whose remit did not extend to Ireland), the play could, in theory, be performed in Ireland. Dublin Castle officials, however, threatened to stop the production, warning that the Abbey’s license might be revoked. Gregory and Yeats agreed only to token changes, and the play went ahead before a packed theater, with police stationed ready “to carry us or rioters to gaol.” “Glorious reception splendid victory” Gregory telegraphed Shaw. “[W]here is the Censor now.”
