May 19, 2023—The New York Public Library’s Center for Educators and Schools is launching a new, curated collection of professional development books to support formal and informal educators, library professionals, and parents, including those who homeschool children. The “Educator Collection”, will be available at all Bronx locations following a ribbon-cutting with NYPL staff, education professionals, and elected officials at the Bronx Library Center on May 19.

“With the launch this month of NYC Reads, the City’s new initiative for literacy instruction, The New York Public Library is offering a rich collection that supports ongoing professional learning for educators, including many titles on the science of reading. We are proud to offer New York City’s educators this wonderful new collection and invite them to use the multitude of resources available at the Library,” said Brian Jones, Director of the Library’s Center for Educators and Schools.

“The Library’s Center for Educators and Schools is devoted to offering programs and services uniquely tailored for New York City’s education community. With the launch of the Educator Collection, we will be able to directly help dedicated teachers of all kinds with an innovative resource that can aid their efforts and help their students succeed,” said Brian Bannon, the Merryl and James Tisch Director of Branch Libraries and Education at The New York Public Library.

The Library’s “Educator Collection” features over 80 titles and will continue to grow, providing extensive information on a wide-range of subjects and topics that support educators. With dedicated shelving and signage, patrons can easily find and access dozens of books at their local library. Patrons can also search the library’s catalog for books by subject, title, or author. While the collection is available for browsing at all Bronx locations, patrons can request materials to be sent to any NYPL location for check out. (Browsing  is expected to roll out to Manhattan and Staten Island branches by next year.) Materials can be checked out for three weeks and renewed under the Library’s standard renewal procedures.

"Now more than ever access and investment to literacy is pivotal to a child's social and academic success. I am so proud to support the launch of the ‘Educator Collection’ for our educators, library professions, and parents. This will empower our village of educators to share their love of literacy with one another and children across New York City," said Council Member Rita Joseph, Chair for the Committee on Education.

"The New York Public Library's Center for Educators and Schools (CES) is a game-changer for educators everywhere. As a former public school teacher, I know firsthand the value of professional development and the importance of having access to top-notch resources. In the Council, I am devoted to helping the Library provide access to resources that can enhance teaching skills and improve the quality of education for students. I fully support CES's mission and encourage all educators to take advantage of this incredible opportunity," said Council Member Eric Dinowitz.

These programs and initiatives are part of the Library’s overall commitment to our branch patrons and education programs, led by the Merryl and James Tisch Director of Branch Libraries and Education. Major support for educational programming is provided by Merryl H. and James S. Tisch.
