Ling Shuhua, memoir of Virginia Woolf draft
Ling Shuhua (1900–1990)
Holograph memoir of Virginia Woolf
ca. 1981
Survived by anguished friends and family, Woolf was eulogized in print as well as private memoir, such as this one by Ling Shuhua, the Chinese modernist writer and artist. Ling wrote this many years following Woolf’s death, after she saw Edna O’Brien’s 1981 biographical play Virginia. Ling concludes her memoir on a subsequent page: “During the last two decades VW has often been written about. Most people saw her as a brilliant writer, very high-brow . . . . Few people realise that she was basically kind hearted and anxious to help others.”
