Emilio Sanchez's Untitled, Male Figures
Emilio Sanchez (1921–1999)
Untitled, Male Figures
Colored pencil on paper, circa 1980s
Emilio Sanchez was a Cuban and American artist best known for painting large-scale, abstract landscapes and cityscapes. As part of his personal artistic practice, he would draw constantly, often on the backs of his mail and correspondence. Many of these drawings deal with eroticism, gender, and LGBTQ+ themes. This left a rich archive that paradoxically documents both his private life and social engagements. Drawn on the back of a Christmas card, this piece is from the archive of his private sketches acquired from his estate and foundation in 2009.
